Electra-Kool Blowers FAQ
Electra-Kool® FAQs
Selection, filtration, installation, troubleshooting, and replacement information for Wayne Products Electra-Kool® filtered blowers and filters.
Model Selection
Select an Electra-Kool® system based on the equipment being cooled, required airflow, operating environment, filter type, voltage, and phase.
How do I choose the correct Electra-Kool® model?
Start with the size and type of equipment being cooled. For electrical enclosures, consider enclosure size, internal heat load, available ambient air, and required airflow. For DC motor cooling, consider the motor size and required airflow.
Then confirm the available voltage and phase, the operating environment, and the level of filtration required.
Current Electra-Kool® model families are 60, 150, 500, 1000, 1400, 2000, and 3000.
Is an Electra-Kool® filtered blower an air conditioner?
No. Electra-Kool® systems move filtered ambient air through an electrical enclosure or across a motor. They do not refrigerate the air and cannot cool equipment below the surrounding ambient-air temperature.
Electra-Kool® is appropriate when filtered ambient-air ventilation can remove the required heat. If the enclosure must be maintained below ambient temperature, or the surrounding air is too hot to provide adequate cooling, an air-conditioning system may be required.
Can Electra-Kool® be used for both electrical enclosures and DC motors?
Yes. Electra-Kool® filtered blowers are used for both electrical-enclosure ventilation and DC motor cooling, but the recommended configuration may differ.
Electrical-enclosure applications commonly use Pleated Paper, Polyester, or HEPA filtration depending on the environment. Metal Mesh configurations are commonly used where higher-airflow motor cooling and washable, reusable filtration are priorities.
How much airflow do I need?
Required airflow depends on the enclosure or motor size, heat load, surrounding temperature, and operating conditions. A larger blower is not automatically the correct choice if the electrical, mounting, or filtration requirements do not match the application.
Each Electra-Kool® model page provides the rated airflow and applicable configuration information. If the required airflow is uncertain, provide Wayne Products with the equipment size and application details for review.
Filter Selection & Maintenance
Electra-Kool® filter media are selected according to the environment, contaminant load, airflow needs, and level of filtration required.
Which Electra-Kool® filter should I choose?
- Metal Mesh: Washable and reusable. Commonly used for high-airflow industrial applications and DC motor cooling where coarse airborne contamination must be controlled without unnecessarily restricting airflow.
- Polyester: Washable and reusable where available. A practical choice for many general industrial environments requiring more filtration than an open blower or coarse metal mesh.
- Pleated Paper: Replacement-style filter media used when finer filtration is required, particularly for electrical-enclosure ventilation.
- HEPA: Replacement-style media available on select models when a higher level of fine-particle filtration is required.
Filter availability varies by Electra-Kool® model. Always match the filter to the specific blower model before ordering.
Can Electra-Kool® filters be cleaned and reused?
Metal Mesh and washable Polyester filters can be cleaned and reused.
Pleated Paper and HEPA are replacement-style media and should be replaced when they become loaded or no longer provide adequate airflow.
What does the Electra-Kool® prefilter do?
The prefilter captures larger airborne particles before they reach the primary filter. This can help extend the service life of Pleated Paper, HEPA, or other compatible primary filter media in dusty environments.
Prefilter availability and part number depend on the Electra-Kool® model.
Does every Electra-Kool® filtered blower include the same accessories?
No. Included components depend on the selected filter configuration and blower model.
- Blower Only: Blower without a filtration package.
- Metal Mesh: Metal Mesh filter configuration; normally supplied as the filter configuration without the full enclosure accessory package.
- Polyester: Polyester filter configuration with a compatible prefilter where specified.
- Pleated Paper and HEPA: Full accessory-package configurations on applicable models can include the primary filter, prefilter, louvered vent or vents, thermometer, and air deflector.
The number of vents and exact included components vary by model. Check the selected product configuration before ordering.
Installation & Electrical
How is an Electra-Kool® blower installed?
Electra-Kool® blowers use a bolt-on mounting design. Use the model-specific flange and cutout dimensions when preparing the enclosure or equipment. The Electra-Kool® Model 2000 and Model 3000 motor requires additional support.
Maintain adequate clearance around the blower and filter so air can enter freely and the filter can be removed for service.
Does an electrical enclosure need an outlet for the heated air?
Yes. Air introduced by the Electra-Kool® blower must have a path to leave the enclosure. Louvered outlet vents are included with applicable full accessory-package configurations.
The required number of vents depends on the blower model and configuration, so follow the applicable product information and installation guidance.
Are single-phase and three-phase Electra-Kool® models available?
Yes, depending on the blower model. Current Electra-Kool® offerings include both single-phase and three-phase configurations, while some models are offered only in a particular phase configuration.
Always verify the required voltage and phase before ordering or replacing an existing blower.
How many amps does an Electra-Kool® blower draw?
Current draw varies significantly by blower model, voltage, and phase. Use the electrical specifications for the exact Electra-Kool® configuration being installed rather than selecting wiring or protection based only on the blower model name.
If replacing an existing unit, the nameplate information is also useful for confirming the correct electrical configuration.
Airflow & Troubleshooting
My Electra-Kool® blower is running but airflow seems low. What should I check?
First check the filter for loading or blockage and make sure the air inlet and enclosure outlet vents are not obstructed.
If the unit was recently installed or rewired, verify the electrical connections and impeller rotation against the wiring information for the exact blower model. Incorrect rotation can significantly reduce airflow.
If the cause is still unclear, contact Wayne Products with the model, voltage, phase, and installation details.
How can I help an Electra-Kool® filter last longer?
Inspect the filter regularly and keep the intake area free of heavy buildup. Where the configuration uses a prefilter, the prefilter captures larger particles before they reach the primary filter and can extend the primary filter's service interval.
Filter-service frequency depends on the amount and type of airborne contamination in the application.
Can I operate the enclosure with the door open instead?
An open enclosure does not provide the controlled, filtered airflow that an Electra-Kool® system is designed to provide and can expose internal components to airborne dust, debris, or moisture.
Follow the enclosure manufacturer's electrical-safety requirements and maintain the enclosure as designed during normal operation.
Replacement Filters & Parts
How do I find the correct replacement Electra-Kool® filter?
Start with the Electra-Kool® model number and the filter media currently installed: Metal Mesh, Polyester, Pleated Paper, or HEPA.
Filter dimensions and Wayne part numbers vary by blower model, so do not select a replacement filter based only on appearance or outside diameter.
If the model is unclear, send Wayne Products the blower nameplate information, existing filter part number, or clear photos of the blower and filter.
Can Wayne Products help identify an Electra-Kool® blower or filter I already have?
Yes. Send the model and electrical information from the blower nameplate, any Wayne part number visible on the filter or unit, and clear photos of the existing blower and filter.
Wayne Products can use that information to help identify the correct replacement filter, prefilter, motor, or other compatible component.
Do I need a replacement filter or a complete filter kit?
If the existing mounting hardware is still present and serviceable, you may only need the replacement filter element. A replacement filter kit is used when the required mounting or filter-support components also need to be replaced. Additionally, filter kits can be used to fit an Electra-Kool® filter on a different brand blower.
Match the replacement item to the exact Electra-Kool® model and filter type before ordering. Kit contents vary by model and media.
